Japanese giant Toyota is set to hit the Frankfurt Motor Show next week to publicly unveil the special Hybrid-R edition of its Yaris hatchback. Powered by TMG’s Global Racing Engine – a Garett turbocharged 1.6-liter inline four-cylinder with direct injection – the beefed-up six-speed Prius boasts 300 horsepower to its front wheels while a pair of additional electric motors provides 60hp to each of the rear wheels, thus creating AWD horsepower of 420hp for the tiny automobile. Furthermore, an additional 60hp electric motor provides traction control power during acceleration and acts as a generator while braking for the TS030-derived super capacitor – a system capable of providing a 40hp boost for ten seconds in “Road” mode and a full 120 hp for five seconds in “Track” mode. Cosmetically, bright blue and matte black accent the otherwise stark white exterior while 18” TRD alloy wheels are paired with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tires. Inside, black leather and blue Alcantara Recaro racing bucket seats fill the cabin and are joined by a matching steering wheel with racing-inspired controls and GT 86 sport pedals. Comfortable enough for the road and powerful enough for the track, the Toyota Yaris Hybrid-R will make its premiere in just a few short days.
