Jay-Z is taking over media headlines these days with his upcoming twelfth studio album Magna Carta Holy Grail and the design of “new rules” that come along with it. In order to promote this massively anticipated release, Jay brings forth an unexpected deal with Samsung. According to the Wall Street Journal, the technology giant has purchased 1 million copies of the LP, which is slated for a July 4 release, for $5.00 a piece and plans to give them to Samsung Galaxy smartphone users for free – 72 hours ahead of the release. Needless to say that this move has raised a few eyebrows. While some applaud this move as genius in times of a financially struggling music industry, Nielsen SoundScan will not count Samsung’s purchases in its sales tallies. In addition, some might fear that the name of this corporate sponsor could overshadow the music itself. We decided to dedicate this week’s HYPETRAK poll to the question, whether you mind Samsung’s involvement in this hyped release and why. Let us know your thoughts in the comment and poll sections below.
