Phillip Lim has taken an unorthodox route to combating an age-old problem of “trademark squatters” in China. Rather than wait for the outcome of a lengthy legal process with the holders of the 3.1 Phillip Lim trademark in China, the American designer of Chinese descent will utilize the above logo on all footwear and ready-to-wear apparel in the country starting pre-fall while international markets will maintain the existing signature-based logo. A similar situation also occurred last year around the height of Jeremy Lin’s popularity where his trademark was also acquired in China.
