Tame Impala covering OutKast? That probably isn’t a title you were expecting to see. Everyone loves André and Big Boi, though, right? The five-piece Impala certainly does. The Perth, Australia band is especially fond of “Prototype,” André’s ballad from the right side of 2003’s diamond-certified dual-disc, The Love Below. Lead singer Kevin Parker deems it “one of our favorite songs ever” and describes it as “a nice, groovy slow-burner,” which actually sums up some of the psychedelic rock on his group’s critically-acclaimed sophomore album, 2012’s Lonerism. He and his bandmates churned out their rendition of the tune this week on ‘Like A Version,’ a show that broadcasts on nationwide Australian radio station triple j and specializes in bringing artists in to perform cover songs of their choosing. If you listen above, you might just find that this choice makes more sense than it would seem to on paper.
