On the surface, the trip seems fairly harmless, but remember, Cuba is a communist country. And what many may not know is that a long-term embargo has long been placed on visits to Cuba, so that American tourists must have special U.S. government permission to go. Did Jay-Z and Beyoncé receive this so-called pass to enjoy their fifth wedding anniversary over there? That has yet to be disclosed, but the trip is certainly drawing a fair amount of negative attention. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Mario Diaz-Balart, Republican members of Congress, are specifically questioning the power couple’s visit.
Cuba’s tourism industry is wholly state-controlled; therefore, US dollars spent on Cuban tourism directly fund the machinery of oppression that brutally represses the Cuban people.
