This day in 1988 marked the second of back-to-back NBA Slam Dunk Contest victories for Michael Jordan, defeating Atlanta Hawks star Dominique Wilkins in front of the hometown crowd in Chicago thanks to a soaring leap from the free throw line that ranks among the most iconic sports imagery of all time. Now, to celebrate the 25-year anniversary of the feat, Jordan Brand is bringing back the kicks that graced His Airness’ feet that very day – the White/Cement Grey colorway of the Air Jordan 3. Reincarnated as the Air Jordan 3 Retro ‘88, this special edition of the beloved Tinker Hatfield design stays true to OG form and boasts a white leather upper alongside grey, black and red accents, as well as the design’s signature elephant print detailing. Punctuating the look is the return of “Nike Air” branding to the heel – replacing the Jumpman that has adorned previous retro releases. The Air Jordan 3 Retro ‘88 is due to be available February 6 in limited quantities from select retailers for $200 USD.
