The RED activism campaign recently turned to accomplished designers Sir Jony Ive and Marc Newson to customize a range of consumer products to be sold at auction. A collection of objects that would not seem out of place in a museum was the driving thought behind this latest RED project, which incorporates a custom Leica M camera. Features include a magnesium die-cast body, a commemorative inscription recognizing Ive and Newson, as well as anodized aluminum components unsurprisingly in the vein of many Apple products. Blowing past estimates that ranged between $500,000-$750,000 USD, the specially designed Leica sold for $1.8 million USD at an auction held by Sotheby’s.
