Summary

  • Louis Vuitton has unveiled the Horizon Aluminum, its first aluminum suitcase, developed with Marc Newson to mark the 10th anniversary of the Horizon collaboration
  • The suitcase is the first rivet-free aluminum case on the market, using a single-piece full-depth 3D mould with no folding or riveting, concealed internal hinges, and a Monogram embossed into the shell as a structural rather than decorative element
  • The Horizon Aluminum is accompanied by a Vanity Case applying the same engineering principles, with a removable central divider and an elastic strap for attaching to the suitcase’s telescopic handle

Louis Vuitton has launched the Horizon Aluminum, its first aluminum suitcase, developed in collaboration with Marc Newson to mark the 10th anniversary of their Horizon partnership. The case introduces a construction that has no precedent in luggage design: a rivet-free aluminum shell formed from a single-piece full-depth 3D mould, with concealed internal hinges and a Monogram embossed directly into the aluminum as a load-bearing structural feature rather than a surface graphic.

The engineering decisions behind the Horizon Aluminum are the result of a specific design problem. Aluminum suitcases have traditionally relied on rivets for structural integrity and external hinges for functionality, both of which compromise the clean lines that define Marc Newson’s aesthetic. The solution required rethinking both from the ground up. Traditional rivets have been replaced by an ultra-thin frame system attached directly to the shell, eliminating the need for external fasteners entirely. External hinges have been replaced by concealed mechanisms integrated into the interior of the case without taking up additional internal space — described in the brief as working similarly to an elegant watch mechanism. The result is a surface with no visible hardware, which at this scale and in this material is a genuine first in luggage design.

The Monogram embossing is the most technically significant detail. Where aluminum suitcases typically use grooves to reinforce structural rigidity, the Horizon Aluminum achieves the same function by embossing the Monogram pattern directly into the shell. The pattern becomes a key structural element, distributing stress across the case’s surface while simultaneously serving as the house’s most recognizable visual signature. The shell itself is formed through a series of stamping and laser-cutting processes that allow aluminum sheets to hold the rounded curves that define the Horizon silhouette, a shape that would be impossible to achieve through conventional folding.

The connection to Louis Vuitton’s history is direct and deliberate. At the end of the 19th century, the house designed aluminum trunks for explorers, making the material part of LV’s travel heritage long before it became a hallmark of Marc Newson’s industrial design practice. Newson’s relationship with aluminum runs across his entire career, from the Lockheed Lounge chair that has repeatedly commanded auction records to the aircraft interiors and furniture that established him as the most celebrated industrial designer of his generation. His first Louis Vuitton collaboration, a biomorphic rucksack in 2014, was followed by the Horizon’s launch in 2016. The aluminum suitcase was quietly in development through that decade, and the 10th anniversary gives the release a timeline that reflects the ambition of what was being attempted.

The interior is as considered as the exterior. A thermoformed lining creates a perfectly flat main compartment, optimising capacity in a way the brand claims is unrivalled on the market. The trolley system sits on the outside of the case, freeing the interior from its footprint. An extra-wide telescopic handle provides grip, enlarged flexible wheels absorb shocks and vibrations for a smooth and quiet rolling experience, and VVN or black leather covers the corners and handles. TSA-certified locks are fitted as standard. A protective cover with openings for the wheels, handle, and trolley allows discreet mobility during storage, and a leather luggage tag doubles as a bag hook for securing additional luggage on top.

The accompanying Vanity Case applies the same construction logic: aluminum embossed with the Monogram, no rivets, an ultra-slim frame, concealed hinges, and VVN or black leather trim. Its interior features a removable central divider via a press-stud system, an elastic strap on the back for securing it to the telescopic handle, and multiple internal pockets. Care and repair has been built into the product’s design from the start: the lining is removable in-store to access all components including the wheels, and leather elements can be restored or replaced on request.

The Louis Vuitton Horizon Aluminum suitcase and Vanity Case are available online and at Louis Vuitton stores.
