Traditionally known for their outdoor and military wear, the upcoming 2013 fall collection from Woolrich Woolen Mills draws from the timeless appeal of the automobile. In the capable hands of Mark McNairy, the line benefits from the designer’s visit to a vintage car show where he was inspired by “the beginning of the American infatuation with an automobile.” Conceiving the collection as a proto driver’s outfit, some of the items resulting from his imaginings include mixed-media flat caps, a Donegal suit, and the more innovative pea coat and poncho adapted from blankets. Although the cuts are by all means contemporary, the looks as well as the patterns and fabrics drawn from the Woolrich archive help McNairy to convey an updated classic aesthetic to the next generation.
