These days, innovation is key in the music industry. A testament to that is Atlantic Records’ recent move of hiring Young Jeezy as a Senior Vice President of A&R. The news broke on DJ Greg Street’s radio show on V103 in Atlanta last night, and then Jeezy’s production coordinator DJ Folk took to Twitter to give confirmation. Although Jeezy has since deleted his own tweet about the subject, he too confirmed the rumors, saying, “From the streets to the Boardroom. SVP of A&R at Atlantic Records I am. Let’s Get it! #itsthaworld.” There are not yet any details on what exactly the 34-year-old rapper’s job entails, but such a position typically gives range to sign artists to the label and help develop their projects for the marketplace. It’s common for artists to be executives of their own imprints that are distributed through major record labels, but it’s not every day that we see one taking office at one of the biggest companies in the business. Since Jeezy still has a recording contract with Def Jam, it should be interesting to see how this plays out.
