Today, Converse Inc. announces the launch of the Converse First String Standards Dr. J Pro Leather. Honoring the legend of Julius “Dr. J” Erving and the shoe he made history in, Converse recreates the classic silhouette in a premium crafted version.
“It’s flattering that the Converse Pro Leather shoe, one that has preceded so many other signature shoes, is so widely recognized as the ‘Dr. J’. I have so many memories wearing this shoe and am honored that it has stood the test of time and continues to live on,” says Julius Erving.
Julius Erving defined the game of basketball wearing Converse Pro Leather shoes during the golden age of the sport. His style on and off court is legendary and the new Dr. J Pro Leather pays homage to the man and the shoe that changed basketball forever and defined on and off-court style.
The original shoe launched in 1976, the Pro Leather shoe is not only the shoe that Dr. J made famous, it’s the shoe that ushered in the modern era of basketball footwear. Kicking off the collection, Converse will unveil the classic white and navy colorway. Crafted with rich leathers and premium construction, like early versions, the shoe comes in clean, white uppers contrasted with a navy stitched Star Chevron logo.
Converse First String is a limited-edition collection that celebrate craftsmanship, authenticity and collaboration at the highest level. Only 168 of the white/navy version will be available, beginning Friday, August 5. Shoes will retail for a MSRP of $90 and will be available in men’s sizes 8-13.
