so my friends selling me a tmobile g1 and i dont know if its stolen or not
im pretty sure it is but would i still be able to use it?
and if i couldnt, could i unlock it and then use it?

For G1, you cannot just pop in your sim and use it with your sim unless you already have the data plan.

If you don't plan on paying extra $39 a month for some gay 3g data plan, you can bypass it by doing the following steps.

1. find someone with TMOBILE sim that already have the 3g data plan.
2. pop in their sim card into G1.
3. go to setting and turn the wifi ON.
4. turn off the phone then take the sim out.
5. pop in your sim.
6. profit.

I have bought G1 off of craigslist when my iphone died on me and i've been using it without the data plan for about a month with no problem. it sucks going from iphone to g1, but it's not too bad.

it costs money to unlock though, as much as $75 I think for the G1
T-Mobile unlocks any phone for you except the G1 and any Sidekick

Yes this is true because I am NOT paying $50 a month for regular phone plan + additional $30+ for 3g. Most places now have free wifi and I don't see the point of having 3g.

My sister also has the G1 with the 3g which is nice when driving and using GPS, but not worth the money.

Let me explain again.

This method only works ONLY if you are using TMOBILE sim card and do not wish to sign up with the data plan.

If you are using AT&T sim card, you will need an UNLOCK code which can be purchased.
