That perennial sound bite warning you to “stand clear of the closing doors, please” in the New York subway has, for the past 11 years, engrained itself into the urban soundscape of millions of the city’s inhabitants. Its cheeriness may have assuaged or irritated subway riders at times, but what’s the story of the actual person behind the faceless voice? The New Yorker scoped out the owner of the voice — a certain Charlie Pellett, a British-born, American bred veteran news anchor at Bloomberg Radio. In the interview above, Pellett recounts his journey to becoming the most recognizable voice in New York, from his childhood move from London to New York, his successful mission to get rid of his British accent, and the power of tenuous connections.
