It looks like Sony continue their traditional system slimming with the announcement of their new Playstation 3 Slim. The top-notch video game system will now retail for $300, while still maintaining the same feature as its bulkier counterpart. Gizmodo breaks down some of the juicy details:

The slim will come with a 120GB drive, and will be 32% smaller and 36% lighter than the standard PlayStation 3, as well as using 34% less power. The $300 price will apply to all PlayStation 3s starting tomorrow. The Slim will be available everywhere by the first week of September.

The 80GB PS3 (current model) will be discounted to $300, whereas the 160GB PS3 will be $400. There will be a new PS3 logo as well as modifications to the official name from PLAYSTATION 3 to PlayStation 3 as to not be shouting all the time. It’ll also have a BRAVIA Sync feature that’ll allow you to control the PS3’s XMB with your Sony TV remote as long as they’re connected via HDMI. And the TV will automatically turn off the PS3 when the TV goes off.

There’s also a vertical stand retailing for $24 on September 3. Whether or not you can stand it up vertically for long periods of time without the stand is unknown. Sony also says that they’re eliminating the feature of installing other operating systems on the Slim, so no more Linux. Oh, and there will only be two USB ports.

I don’t understand why all these ignorant fucks hate on Sony. Think about it, Sony has been making consoles for years, they know what they’re doing. PS1-PS3. They even have a fucking hand-held that, when hacked, can access YouTube, PS1 games and certain arcade games, NES, SNES, SEGA, etc. Microsoft doesn’t have that shit, yeah, sure they might be ahead, but Sony has some dope products. Oh, and one more thing that Xbox gamers won’t have: GOD OF WAR 3. SO FUCK YOU!

this is the way SONY does all the time…PS->PS one, PS2->PS2 Slim, PSP-PSP2000->PSP3000 slim, Now is PS3-PS3 Slim…but the traditional ones are always have the better quality than the Slim ones…
$300 is good price, if there are not much difference but the size and the weight…
I got mine for $500 when PS3 just came out.

it’s crazy how everything gets smaller and smaller.

  11. Posted by: tman916 on August 19, 2009 at 7:42 pm

If I had the money, I’d buy one and use it as a rest for my xbox 360. Sony (IMO) hasn’t been doin it right since PS1.

  15. Posted by: sktch2 on August 19, 2009 at 10:22 am

why didnt sony just start out with this design? i guarantee u they wuda did better in las years console wars. Sony just likes losing m oney i swear. And the psp go doesnt even have two analogs..after counless complaints you would think theyd give it one after how many remodels..sony makes me sick and this is why i converted to xbox live.

    @NUCLEUS.ONE

“Do they purposely create the 1st versions larger and with more empty space, only to slim it down a few months later?”

No. I would think that if it actually was a few months later, but the original ps3 came out a few YEARS ago.

they slim it down b/c the tech got better (cheaper, smaller chips) that are developed over time.

i dunno about ps3 slim, but i know ps2 slim was possible b/c they used new chips that they developed for ps3. so maybe the research they did for ps4 made ps3 slim possible.

    No Backwards compatibility? NO THANKS.

  19. Posted by: Fletch on August 19, 2009 at 6:16 am

OG looks better imo, the plastic on this model looks cheap.

  20. Posted by: Cosmo on August 19, 2009 at 5:02 am

i have the 160 gig and i prefer the bulky one, it shits all over the xbox its big shiny and powerful, Microsoft is just a skinny little stick compared to it, but now this little one makes us look bad :/ it looks cheap too with its matt plastic and not even a nice matt, like speckly matt i don’t like it at all but it’ll be good fur people who didn’t want the superior play station product because of the price

  21. Posted by: steve smith on August 19, 2009 at 3:37 am

Do they purposely create the 1st versions larger and with more empty space, only to slim it down a few months later?

    ^^^

the ps3 has been out for over 2 years, so they havent slimmed it down a few months later.

The reason they launch a slim line version is because they want to increase the life cycle of the product.

But personally i dont find it appealing, i’ll stick to my 60gb ps3.

  22. Posted by: PpRBaCkD on August 19, 2009 at 3:11 am

why wouldnt they make it PS2 compatible… sooo stupid.

  23. Posted by: dopesir on August 19, 2009 at 1:47 am

Wow playstation is finally catching on. I guess the dumbasses thought it was about time to wisen up. Too bad they already lost their market share for good. hahahaha

  24. Posted by: henrychinaski on August 19, 2009 at 12:54 am

Still no backwards compatibility with Playstation 2. The PSP Go has no UMD slot. It’s almost like Sony wants to lose the console wars.

  25. Posted by: Grail on August 18, 2009 at 11:44 pm

Xbox does have a lead…But Sony built this for the future of gaming…Optimism homeboy! I’ll stick to my backplay compatible system tho..

  26. Posted by: Dave on August 18, 2009 at 11:22 pm

  31. Posted by: vsvm on August 18, 2009 at 10:45 pm

this one looks kinda cheap, the old one with the piano black finish and chrome looks better although more bulky, I’ll stick to my first gen. PS3…

  33. Posted by: RNN on August 18, 2009 at 9:28 pm

  34. Posted by: Technology Slice on August 18, 2009 at 8:58 pm

  35. Posted by: paul on August 18, 2009 at 8:34 pm

So the bulky 80gb is $300 and the slim 120gb is also 300?

I’ll go for the slimmer one, bout time I got a ps3 too.

Sick! Don’t have a choice anymore, got to grab one.

  39. Posted by: Ryojiikun on August 18, 2009 at 6:55 pm

lol This system is for chumps if you gonna get a ps3 get the real stuff and own the 60gb from the launch. Slimmer ones has no cooling system so its trash.

  41. Posted by: yahsidadetox on August 18, 2009 at 6:43 pm

  42. Posted by: Arcieri Keness on August 18, 2009 at 6:42 pm

It’s about time, because Nintendo Wii was kick that butt, eh? So, this will officially put PS back in the race again.

At this point Xbox will fall to the bottom of the rack and be used as much as my SNES. Good thing I never purchased one ;-)

    Can’t wait till Sept :-)

  43. Posted by: yo on August 18, 2009 at 6:38 pm

To speak ill of Playstation is blasphemy.

  44. Posted by: Flymatador on August 18, 2009 at 5:42 pm
