As expected, there was a huge turn out following the breaking news of the Back to the Future Marty McFly inspired Nike Hyperdunk just days before the release. Making sure aficionado’s got what they waited so eagerly for, the good people at Undefeated set up a surprise for the ages. Not only did Mr.Laker show up but he showed up in retro fashion, with the timeless classic DMC Delorean by his side. The first 10 people in line, got to meet Kobe Bryant, take a picture with him and even get his autograph on the highly sought after sneakers, after a long wait that extended past 24 hours.

2 1/2 days….that’s how long heads have been waiting @ house of hoops in the big apple. i was @ the undftd santa monica release and i got totally shafted. i was there for 12 hrs, i think the first cat was there for about 24 hrs. it was mad unorganized, peeps were cutting in line when kobe showed up an hour late in the delorean. twas a mess, no wristbands or anything, ridiculous. then they raffle off the last 10 pair, and of course, some people who show up 15 minutes prior win a pair. i hear it was also a bad look @ NTLA when they were passing out wristbands. peeps were getting salty, cops were by every hour. heads had to sit on the marble cause i imagine the stuffy city of beverly hills would’nt allow chairs or the appearance of camping. the hyperdunk mcfly hype has hit a critical mass, it’s hitting every hipster blog, yahoo, wired mag, news outlet, you name it. i haven’t seen this much hype since the titanium or the pigeon. i didn’t see this one coming. i don’t know how i feel about it…it leaves a bad taste in my mouth. i’m addicted to sneakers but at the same time i feel like i need to grow up and leave this bullsh*t. these kicks have hit $1,900 on ebay. that is effin madness and makes me utterly sick. people don’t get marketing. nike could have made more of these mcfly’s and they would have easily gotten consumed by all of us and would have made more money than doing a limited release…but by making them limited, it creates a buzz and hype that is utterly priceless. i wouldn’t call it genius but it’s pretty damn clever. i’m banking that the nike marketing gurus didn’t even see this one coming. i’m willing to bet that they are surprised at the level of success and buzz of this one.

Both sides brought up some good points. I completely agree with Undefeated’s the lack of organization and their price mark-ups. That whole Santa Monica scene completed skewed my view of Undefeated, cuz I’ve never experienced that kind of wylin’ out chaos with no one attempting to mediate at the one in LA. Those “children” out there were definitely Undefeated’s demographic so I can’t blame the fact that kiddies have the tendency to overly hype sh*t up and blaming’em for being sponsored by mommy does no good either. Example: I pay $465 a monh for my Lanver Evo 9 and could barely afford an intake/exhaust, whereas these spoiled 16 year olds don’t drop a dime for the same car and saving mommy’s allowance for a month will get’em a new set of Volk’s. Unappreciative kiddies exist in every aspect of every game–nuthin we can do. But Undefeated can. Those who waited a whole damn day, 6-7-8-9 hours, whatever and STILL NOT GET A PAIR. That’s the epitamy of wackness. Udefeated needs to honor that kin of dedication and pay some damn homage to the cats that’ve been supporting’em before Nike even recognized them enough to f*ck with.
