Apple Is Reportedly Working on a Robotic Arm Smart Display for 2028
The robotic display is codenamed J595 and carries an estimated price of around $1,000 USD.
Summary
Apple is actively developing a $1,000 robotic smart display internally codenamed J595
The hardware boasts a 9-inch screen on an articulated arm capable of 360-degree rotation
Software teams are holding the launch for a projected 2028 release to perfect AI integration
Apple is currently developing a high-end expansion to its smart home display lineup, with a report from The Information shedding light on an unreleased product featuring a moving robotic arm. Former Apple employees state that the company could ultimately brand this higher-end model as the Apple HomeView Ultra. Internally carrying the codename J595, the robotic display product carries an estimated price tag of around $1,000 USD. Arriving at a $700 USD premium over the $299 USD standard Apple HomeView announced last month, this device expands Apple’s connected smart home ecosystem into the high-end market.
The defining design element of the upcoming HomeView Ultra is its physical footprint, featuring a 9-inch display that swivels around a robotic arm. This hardware closely resembles a classic articulated desk lamp, bearing a direct similarity to the fixture featured in Pixar’s logo. A separate report from MacRumors notes that the 9-inch screen features full 360-degree capabilities. Rather than remaining static on a counter, the robotic display device uses built-in sensors to follow users as they move around a space during FaceTime calls.
Despite the futuristic design, physical engineering is complete, as hardware for the HomeView Ultra has been ready for two years. Apple’s software team is currently delaying the launch to fine-tune integrated AI and home automation features. Holding the release allows developers to refine complex automated responses before delivering robotic hardware to consumers. One planned automation feature involves the display automatically switching on a light when someone enters the room.
Because of this intentional software delay, early adopters must wait several years to purchase the technology. The Information states that Apple could formally announce the device in 2027 and begin shipping to buyers in 2028. This launch timeline aligns with Bloomberg reporting from last month regarding a projected 2027 or 2028 release window. When it ultimately arrives, the $1,000 USD HomeView Ultra will represent a major functional shift for Apple’s home automation platform.
