Roads? Where the New Tesla Roadster Is Going, It Doesn’t Need Them
Elon Musk unveils a rocket-boosted electric coupe that flips off ramps and drives upside down, revealing a rocket-powered flying car as the next generation Tesla Roadster.
Summary
Tesla has unveiled a flying second-generation Roadster concept engineered in partnership with SpaceX
Armed with rechargeable compressed-air thrusters and underside suction fans the electric coupe claims a 0 to 60 mph sprint in 0.81 seconds
Production for the aerospace-inspired two-seater is slated to begin in 2028
Tesla has officially showcased its flying second-generation Roadster, demonstrating extreme airborne capabilities powered by rocket propulsion systems developed in collaboration with SpaceX. The concept test run saw the electric coupe clear rows of parked vehicles, launch off half-pipe ramps, and maneuver completely upside down.
Engineered in tandem with SpaceX, the high-performance two-seater incorporates a network of compressed-air thrusters into its underbody and rear to generate lift, stabilize stationary hops, and cushion landings. Powered by fuel-free, rechargeable onboard air tanks, the rear-facing thrusters double as launch boosters, rocketing the vehicle from 0 to 60 mph in a claimed 0.81 seconds. To tackle inverted driving on vertical half-pipes, the chassis utilizes an integrated fan suction system to maintain continuous downward grip.
Tesla chief designer Franz von Holzhausen penned the exterior with an “aerospace aesthetic,” outfitting the hard-top coupe with angular bodywork, scissor doors, and an active deployable spoiler. Inside, the vehicle features seats molded directly to the structural chassis and an electronic steer-by-wire system that eliminates mechanical steering linkages. While Elon Musk noted that street legality remains unconfirmed, the production version is intended to serve as the only driver-operated vehicle in Tesla’s future lineup.
Production on the Tesla Roadster is scheduled to begin in 2028.
