Tesla has reopened orders for its next-generation Roadster, requiring a massive $50,000 USD deposit weeks before the vehicle's official unveiling

The October 1 event in Texas is set to feature a hovering, remote-operated stunt car equipped with SpaceX cold gas thrusters

The fresh round of reservations arrives despite the original 2017 Roadster suffering at least eight delays without delivering a single production unit

The Tesla Roadster is officially back on the order books, and securing a spot in line requires a massive injection of blind faith. During the week of September 20, the automaker quietly reopened reservations for its next-generation electric hypercar, asking buyers to commit heavy funds before a final production version has even been shown. Claiming a reservation requires a steep $50,000 USD deposit initiated by a fully refundable $5,000 USD credit card payment and locked in by a $45,000 USD wire transfer that must be completed within 10 days. The reservation portal went live approximately two weeks ahead of a highly anticipated October 1 reveal event scheduled near Waco, Texas, where the company states it will finally outline official pricing, hardware specifications and production targets.

By demanding an immediate five-figure commitment for an unseen silhouette, the automaker tests the limits of its own brand loyalty against a notoriously fractured track record. This marks the second time the company has collected $50,000 USD deposits for the Tesla Roadster following a November 2017 push that also offered a $250,000 USD Founders Series option requiring total payment upfront. That original 2017 iteration was promised for production in 2020 but has since suffered at least eight separate delays without putting a single unit on the road in nearly nine years. Making matters more complex for early adopters, the company has previously made it difficult for high-profile reservation holders, including tech creator Marques Brownlee and OpenAI executive Sam Altman, to successfully receive refunds on canceled preorders.

The upcoming October 1 showcase aims to reset the narrative by swapping outdated concepts for a stark aesthetic overhaul. Recent teasers indicate the new iteration will abandon older curves for a sharp redesign that heavily incorporates angular Cyber styling complete with a modern full-width light bar. This updated aesthetic attempts to eclipse the massive promises made back in 2017 when the vehicle was pitched with a $200,000 base price, a 620-mile battery range, a top speed pushing past 250 mph and a scorching 0-60 mph time of under 1.9 seconds.

To sell the radically updated vision, CEO Elon Musk has teased an extravagant live demonstration for the Tesla Roadster built around SpaceX designed cold gas thrusters that he claims will allow the car to physically hover or fly. However, this thruster-equipped stunt car is expected to be entirely remote-operated, will not be street legal and could command a standalone price tag in the hundreds of thousands of dollars on its own. Musk explicitly stated at the All-In Summit that a live audience is required for the Texas event so attendees can personally vouch that the physics-defying demonstration is not generated by AI. Despite the theatrical push, the broader market remains skeptical of an imminent launch. Prediction contracts on Polymarket currently estimate a less than 5 percent chance of the vehicle reaching customers by the end of 2026 and project a 61 percent chance for actual 2027 deliveries.
