Ahead of its launch, we got a sneak peek of the collection at the designer’s Stockholm apartment.
Summary
- Gustaf Westman is releasing a 12-piece collection with IKEA on September 20
- Named “Vinterflint”, it is designed for holiday entertaining and includes plates, cups, and lighting
Since establishing his own studio in 2020, architect-turned-designer Gustaf Westman has developed a signature “chunky” aesthetic and a worldwide fanbase to go with it.
From his Stockholm-based space, he has become known for his supersized approach to homewares, creating voluminous coffee cups and saucers, chubby dinner plates, and inflated wine glasses in a full spectrum of shades.
Now, the Swedish designer is readying himself for a launch that he describes as a “childhood dream come true” – his debut collection with IKEA.
When news of their collaboration broke earlier this summer, it seemed as though it had been a dream come true for more than just Westman. After images of the first piece from the collection were teased – the so-called “Meatball Plate” – you couldn’t scroll for long without seeing it over and over again.
Now, they’re releasing the full 12-piece collection.
Forming part of IKEA’s annual “Vinterfint” winter collection, the limited-edition range puts a playful spin on festive homewares. Westman was keen to take the direction away from the traditional aesthetics often associated with that time of year – “My designs don’t fit in that Christmas aesthetic in Scandinavia, so I was worried,” he tells us. “Instead, together with IKEA, we came up with a concept that was about celebration and hosting.”
In addition to the all-important meatball tray, there will be porcelain plates, cups, candleholders, and lighting. The color palette is a happy medium between Westman’s typical palette and something a little bit more seasonal – there’s green and red as to be expected, but there’s also bubble gum pink and baby blue.
“Celebration often comes with established traditions, and we were curious to explore a more fun and inclusive take,” says Maria O’Brian, Creative Leader at IKEA of Sweden. “Teaming up with Gustaf Westman felt like a natural match to help us reimagine the holidays with a twist. His approach to colour and form feels very true to IKEA, but he challenges conventions in a bold, expressive way.”
Collaborating with Westman is a clever move from IKEA. The Stockholm-based designer has long understood the power of content and used it to propel his designs to a global scale.
He came along at a time when a new generation of interiors obsessives was emerging, and the attention-grabbing style of his work, with the bold colours and big shapes, is a staple feature in the homes of many an influencer. Still, as popular as he already is, this collaboration strives to make Westman’s work available to more people: “We’re thrilled to make the work of such an exciting designer accessible to a wider audience,” O’Brian adds.
Prices are set to range from £4 GBP for a tealight holder to £29 GBP for a large plate. IKEA Family members can shop the collection from September 19 at special pre-sale events in selected stores. Then, the collection will be available for all customers in IKEA stores from September 20.
