Range Rover Debuts Its First Electric SUV With a $138,000 USD Starting Price

The Range Rover Electric marks the first time the brand has offered its flagship SUV with fully electric propulsion, a milestone the company frames as a new era for the original luxury SUV. Rather than adapting an existing platform, the model sits on a flexible architecture designed to accommodate electrification alongside the marque’s combustion and hybrid options, all built at the Solihull plant that has produced Range Rovers since 1970.

At the heart of the vehicle are twin permanent-magnet motors rated at 260kW each, together producing up to 542hp and 627 lb-ft of torque, figures the brand places on par with its V8 output. That translates to a 0-60mph time as quick as 4.3 seconds and a 50-75mph overtaking sprint in as little as 2.7 seconds. Powering it all is a usable 118.5kWh double-stacked battery made up of 344 prismatic cells, running on an 800-volt architecture that supports fast, split-charging capability. Range lands at up to 333 miles on the EPA cycle, while a 10-80% top-up takes around 22 minutes on a rapid DC charger, or roughly 125 miles added in 10 minutes at peak rate.

Where the Range Rover Electric works hardest to prove itself is in capability, the area where an EV flagship could most easily lose the plot. The brand leaned on its “Range Rover first, Electric second” principle, keeping the silhouette almost entirely intact and limiting the EV-specific changes to an aerodynamically optimized grille, wheels and a tailored underbody. Underneath, new control systems do the heavy lifting: Integrated Traction Management adjusts motor speed within 50 milliseconds, which the company says is up to 100 times faster than a combustion equivalent, and a Single Pedal mode helps the SUV pull away on gradients and climb slopes up to 45 degrees. Wading depth holds at up to 35 inches, and a lower center of gravity paired with twin-chamber air suspension is positioned to sharpen the drive rather than blunt it.

Range Rover backs the engineering with a development program it describes as its most exhaustive yet, citing more than 900,000 miles of virtual and physical testing and over 300 patent applications, the most ever filed for a single vehicle in its history. Among them is ThermAssist heat management, which the brand says can add up to 25 miles of range and cut heating energy use by 40% in extreme temperatures. Martin Limpert, Managing Director of Range Rover, tied the effort back to the brand’s core promise. “Electric propulsion is perfectly suited to the exquisite refinement of Range Rover, elevating the sense of calm and secluded sanctuary for occupants,” he said, adding that the team pushed testing further than planned to make it “genuinely the most accomplished Range Rover ever.”

For buyers, the range spans SE and Autobiography trims plus SV, SV Black and SV Ultra, offered in short or long wheelbase, with pricing starting at $138,000 USD in the US. A curated First Edition arrives in Belgravia Green, Santorini Black or Varesine Blue, finished with newly introduced Light Cloud Ultrafabrics PU and Kvadrat textile interior. North American owners also gain built-in NACS compatibility for access to the Tesla Supercharger network.
