Summary
Denim Tears and COMME des GARÇONS Parfums have created Tears, an eau de parfum composed around the scent of cotton
The fragrance draws on rural Georgia just after the rain, when heat rises off red clay and the cotton fields sit wet and green
Perfumer Paul Guerlain built the musk floral as a dry composition with a hay-like warmth
Denim Tears has turned its latest COMME des GARÇONS collaboration into a fragrance, working with COMME des GARÇONS Parfums on an eau de parfum called Tears. The scent is composed around the smell of cotton, extracting its essence from rural Georgia in the moments after rain, when heat lifts off the red clay and the fields sit wet and green.
The composition is a musk floral, and it moves in three clear stages. The opening pairs Galbanum, Ambrettolide and Sage, leaning green and slightly resinous from the first spray. From there the heart unfolds across Daffodil, Jasmine, Flouve and Orris, threading soft florals through a grassy, powdery core. The base is where the concept lands hardest, settling into Vetiver, Hay, Cypriol and Musk for a finish that reads dry rather than sweet, carrying a hay-like warmth that echoes the sun-baked fields at its center.
That structure is the work of perfumer Paul Guerlain, who translated a distinctly place-based brief into the bottle. The reference point is specific and sensory, drawn from founder Tremaine Emory’s own memories of the region. “There’s certain smells that I know of from my time spending my summers in Harlem, Georgia: the red clay, the morning dew, all of it, the sweat from the heat, all of it, and all that mixes together here,” Emory said in the collection notes.
The result formalizes something Denim Tears has long explored through garments and objects into an olfactory register, using the raw material of cotton as both scent and subject. The accompanying campaign was shot by Dexter Navy in Harlem, Georgia, grounding the fragrance in the same landscape that shaped its notes.
Tears releases worldwide on September 18 via Denim Tears online, at Africa Diaspora Goods, and at select Dover Street Market locations and Comme des Garçons shops worldwide.
