New Balance and JJJJound have turned to the 740N, a returning archive silhouette, for their latest collaboration. The Montreal design studio takes a model that fuses early-2000s design cues with a cleaner, more angular treatment, reworking it into a streamlined runner with a distinct visual identity.

The construction leads with a breathable mesh upper, layered with synthetic no-sew overlays that give the shoe its sharp, angular lines without the bulk of stitched paneling. Nubuck and rubber round out the material palette, adding a tactile contrast to the airy mesh base. Inside, a navy mesh lining carries the tonal story through to the footbed, while a contrasted off-white mesh tongue punctuated with red, navy and black accents breaks up the neutral surface. Off-white oval sports laces and a JJJJound 740 logo on the lateral sides complete the detailing, with an off-white midsole sitting atop a black rubber outsole.

The colorway is where JJJJound’s familiar hand is most visible. The studio revisits the earthy tones that have anchored its New Balance work over the years, building on a foundation of warm beiges and taupe. Against that soft neutral base, dark navy and deep red accents provide the contrast, a combination the studio traces back to classic New Balance suede trainers. The result reads as restrained rather than loud, letting the material mix and the reworked silhouette carry the design.

Taken together, the mesh-forward upper, no-sew overlay system and muted tonal blocking position the 740N as a technical archive revival rather than a straight reissue. It is a shoe built to foreground construction and proportion, extending the visual language JJJJound has developed across its ongoing New Balance projects.

The JJJJound x New Balance 740N launches Thursday, July 30 at 9 a.m. EST.
