First announced in 2020, Project Mara was intended to be an experimental psychological horror experience. The title aimed to deliver a grounded representation of mental terror set within a single photo-realistic apartment. The studio has now shifted away from this experimental scope to prioritize the Hellblade universe and give fans a deeper gameplay experience. Consolidating the workforce ensures the new project can execute a much broader vision.

The newly announced sequel is scheduled for a 2027 release. Simply titled Senua, the game pushes the acclaimed series into full action-adventure territory. Players will explore a linear story set across an interconnected map roughly twice the size of the one found in Hellblade II. The narrative thrusts the titular Celtic warrior into a fractured vision of Purgatory resembling her childhood homeland. She must battle to reach the afterlife and reunite with loved ones.

Combat receives a significant overhaul compared to previous entries. The developers introduced tactical choices that allow players to engage multiple enemies simultaneously or opt for stealth approaches. The protagonist can now dual-wield weapons, throw axes at distant targets and utilize new Focus Abilities to manipulate reality during intense encounters. Boss fights will lean heavily into fantastical elements born from myth and madness. This evolution directly answers player feedback from earlier installments by delivering more agency and robust mechanics. Ninja Theory aims to retain the intimate storytelling of the franchise while providing the mechanical depth expected of a premium modern release.
