Alex Chinneck’s new installations for Dior are gracing the House with some sculptural whimsy. The British artist is known for his playful public installations that bend and warp our perception of urban life, and in his next act, he’s arrived at the New York and Los Angeles flagships with a tale of two cities.
House of Dior New York plays host to nine new sculptures that reimagine Madison Avenue bustle through a surrealist lens: A bouquet of twisted traffic lights burst in green, yellow and red; street lamps are “bent in bows to evoke couture ribbons, threads and drapery,” per a statement from Dior; a yellow taxi softens and melts against the glass facade.
Similarly, the Los Angeles iteration taps into the opulence of the boulevard in five works. Car culture and sleek bodywork step to the forefront, most notably in a red ride curled into a full loop. In another moment, a mannequin quietly swings from a bent streetlight, channeling the city’s cinematic allure.
Marking the first anniversary of both Peter Marino-designed spaces, the commissions celebrate Dior’s rich history in the United States in, what the House calls, “veritable visual poems.” Alex Chinneck’s creations are now on view at House of Dior New York and Beverly Hills.
