The Lands Between are officially coming to the big screen. A24 and Bandai Namco Entertainment have confirmed that their massive live-action adaptation of the critically acclaimed video game Elden Ring is locked in for a global theatrical release. Slated to arrive in IMAX theaters on March 3, 2028, the sprawling dark fantasy epic will be written and directed by visionary filmmaker Alex Garland (Civil War, Ex Machina), who successfully pitched his ambitious cinematic passion project directly to FromSoftware creator Hidetaka Miyazaki.
To accompany the release date announcement, the studio has finally unveiled the film’s star-studded ensemble cast. Leading the brutal journey into the mystical realm are Kit Connor (Heartstopper), Cailee Spaeny (Alien: Romulus), and Ben Whishaw (Skyfall), who are all reportedly tackling the central roles of the Tarnished outcasts. The staggering call sheet is rounded out by an impressive roster of established talent, including Nick Offerman, Jonathan Pryce, Tom Burke, Havana Rose Liu, Sonoya Mizuno, Ruby Cruz, Jefferson Hall, Emma Laird, John Hodgkinson, and Peter Serafinowicz.
Behind the camera, Garland is teaming up with a powerhouse group of producers. Peter Rice, Andrew Macdonald, and Allon Reich will produce the IMAX-bound feature alongside Vince Gerardis and George R. R. Martin, the legendary fantasy author who famously collaborated on the worldbuilding of the original 2022 game. Breaking the mold of traditional studio-driven video game adaptations, Garland reportedly wrote a 160-page script entirely on spec to secure the rights to the 30-million-selling Game of the Year winner.
With principal photography officially slated to kick off this spring in the UK, fans are already clamoring to see how Garland will translate the infamously punishing, lore-heavy soulslike experience into a cohesive cinematic narrative. The original action RPG tasks players with exploring vast, decaying environments, defeating a lineup of grotesque demigods, and reassembling the shattered Elden Ring to ascend as the new Elden Lord.
As A24 undertakes what is heavily rumored to be the most expensive production in the independent studio’s history, the long countdown to 2028 has officially begun. With sets currently being built and cameras preparing to roll in a matter of days, audiences can prepare to witness one of gaming’s greatest modern masterpieces transformed into a sweeping theatrical event.
