It looks like the kitchen is finally preparing for its last service. According to Emmy-winning recurring guest star Jamie Lee Curtis, FX‘s massive hit comedy-drama The Bear is officially coming to an end with its upcoming fifth season.
Speculation regarding the show’s conclusion first ignited in late February when Curtis—who masterfully plays Donna, the deeply troubled matriarch of the Berzatto family—shared a heartfelt wrap post on social media alongside her on-screen daughter, Abby Elliott. In the caption, Curtis praised creator Chris Storer and the crew for “completing the story of this extraordinary family that we have all fallen in love with,” immediately sending fans into a panic over the use of the word “completing.”
During a recent red carpet interview with Access Hollywood, Curtis was asked directly about the online frenzy her post created and whether the series was truly shutting its doors. “Everybody’s confirmed the show is ending. I don’t understand why that’s such a [big deal],” Curtis responded candidly. “Unless I’m gonna get a call from all the people saying, ‘You just told everyone,’ I think everybody understood that it was the last season of the show. If it isn’t, then I’ve completely blown it.”
While FX and Hulu have yet to release a formal announcement regarding the show’s final fate, a Season 5 conclusion aligns perfectly with the series’ current narrative trajectory. Season 4 ended on a highly transitional note, with Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) confessing to Syd (Ayo Edebiri) and Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) that he wants to walk away from the fine-dining establishment they tirelessly built. Showrunner Chris Storer has also previously hinted at a mapped-out, multi-season arc rather than an indefinite run.
Whether Curtis accidentally let the cat out of the bag or simply stated an industry open secret, fans should prepare their goodbyes. Season 5 of The Bear is expected to premiere later this year.
