BD Barcelona is celebrating the centenary of Antoni Gaudí by reissuing a selection of his furniture designs. Originally conceived for Casa Calvet and Casa Batlló, these pieces were designed as extensions of architecture and the human body rather than mere decoration. Chairs, benches, stools, coat hangers, mirrors and metal fittings all reflect Gaudí’s philosophy of form shaped by movement and daily use, embodying a balance between functionality and sculptural expression.
Each piece in the collection is handcrafted in solid varnished oak, a material Gaudí transformed into fluid, ergonomic forms. Backrests curve to follow the spine, seats widen where weight is carried, and legs twist subtly to create a sense of lightness despite the density of the wood. His metal fittings, such as door handles and knobs, were modeled directly by hand in clay before being cast in brass, leaving traces of Gaudí’s physical gestures embedded in their final form. These details ensure that every act of use continues the original dialogue between human body and design.
BD has played a pioneering role in preserving and reissuing these works since 1975, faithfully reproducing them with traditional techniques and materials. Each piece bears Gaudí’s signature and comes with certification from the Real Cátedra Gaudí, guaranteeing authenticity. By safeguarding this collection, BD reinforces Gaudí’s legacy as a designer whose vision blurred the boundaries between architecture, furniture, and sculpture.
