Directed by Craig Gillespie, the film promises a stark departure from the traditional superhero origin story. Starring Milly Alcock in the titular role, the trailer teases a visually stunning, hard-edged space opera that sees Superman’s cousin trading the bright skies of Metropolis for the brutal frontiers of the galaxy.
Based on the critically acclaimed comic run Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, the screenplay by Ana Nogueira follows Kara Zor-El on a darker path than her famous cousin. After an unexpected and ruthless adversary—played by Matthias Schoenaerts—strikes too close to home, Kara is forced onto a path of vengeance. The footage reveals that she won’t be traveling alone; she reluctantly joins forces with an “unlikely companion” in the form of Lobo, the cigar-chomping Czarnian bounty hunter played by Jason Momoa. The pairing confirms months of speculation regarding Momoa’s new role in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s rebooted DC Universe.
The ensemble cast features Eve Ridley as Ruthye Marye Knoll, the young alien who recruits Supergirl for her quest, alongside David Krumholtz, Emily Beecham, and Schoenaerts as the villainous Krem of the Yellow Hills.
