Summary

  • The “LIBERTAS” SS26 collection reclaims the Statue of Liberty’s radical history, highlighting its original purpose as a celebration of abolition and the Union’s Civil War victory.
  • Tremaine Emory blends diasporic motifs, such as cotton wreaths and broken chains, with Americana to honor overlooked Black history through streetwear.

Denim Tears‘ SS26 collection “LIBERTAS” draws reference to the Statue of Liberty as its central theme. Evoking its historic connection to the abolition of slavery in the United States, the brand pulls together its signature diasporic motifs with Lady Liberty’s ubiquitous imagery.

While the Statue of Liberty has become ingrained in American iconography, its radical origins are often glossed over. Dedicated in 1886, the larger-than-life statue gifted by France celebrated the Union’s victory in the Civil War and the emancipation of enslaved Africans.

Throughout the lookbook, Lady Liberty is recontextualized and reclaimed by Denim Tears, incorporating the figure in the form of icons, faded drawings, embroidery, and even in metal studs. Simultaneously, references to the African diaspora, like Denim Tears’ signature cotton wreaths and Pan-African-inspired flags, interact with the iconography, drawing its connection to slavery.

Founder Tremaine Emory is known for his socio-historical approach to creating streetwear, often drawing attention to lesser-known parts of history involving Black communities and figures. Upon launching Denim Tears’ first in-house denim line, Emory shared with Hypebeast, “It’s about viewing something seen as ‘Americana’ and imbuing it with a history that hasn’t been recognized by the Western world.” “LIBERTAS” is no different.

Standing out is a reversible bomber, which features cotton wreaths and a flag on the black shell and an XL Pan-African flag patch on the bright orange interior. Elsewhere, a lustrous varsity jacket, emblazoned with a Denim Tears wordmark on the front, is renderedin patriotic hues of red, white, and blue.

Print and pattern are integral to the range. A Real Tree-inspired Denim Tears camouflage is featured on a canvas jacket and trousers, a smoky print reveals vignettes of the American flag, and Denim Tears’ tropical florals make an appearance, too. A recurring motif throughout the collection is broken chains, giving weight to the collection’s ethos of liberation.
