After Eight Years of Silence, ‘The Elder Scrolls VI’ Is Officially ‘Sentinel’
Bethesda made the title official in its 40th-anniversary video, with reports placing the game in Hammerfell.
Bethesda has given its long-awaited sequel a full title, confirming that the next Elder Scrolls game will be called The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel. The reveal closes out more than eight years of the project going by a numeral alone, and arrives just as the studio marks its 40th anniversary and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim approaches its 15th birthday this month.
Studio chief Todd Howard handled the announcement personally, closing out an anniversary video of just under 10 minutes that looked back on Bethesda Game Studios’ four-decade history. With the milestone in hand, Howard called it the “perfect time” to put a name on the game. Bethesda is keeping everything else under wraps for now, and its accompanying XBOX Wire post shares only the new Sentinel logo.
Where Bethesda stays quiet, earlier reporting fills in the outline. The Verge’s Tom Warren, who reported last week that the title would land in November, says Sentinel takes players to Hammerfell, a province fans have previously visited in The Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard and The Elder Scrolls Online. The name itself fits that picture, as Sentinel is a major city in the region.
Warren also reports that Sentinel will be the first entry to dig into the history of the Elder Scrolls themselves, the mysterious ancient artifacts behind the franchise’s name. If that holds, it would put the series’ central mystery at the heart of the story for the first time, though Bethesda has yet to confirm any narrative details, gameplay or a release window.
