Michael Jordan's 1997 Ferrari 550 Maranello sold for a record-breaking $2.7 million at a Joopiter auction

The massive final price points to a generational shift in the collector market for cultural memorabilia

The legendary sports car was recovered after a decade-long search that traced an incomplete VIN from an internet forum

The modern collector market just witnessed a monumental transaction as Michael Jordan‘s 1997 Ferrari 550 Maranello officially sold for a record $2.7 million USD on September 30. Hosted by the auction establishment Joopiter, which was founded by Pharrell Williams, the high-profile sale effortlessly eclipsed its initial estimated block of $700,000 USD to $1,300,000 USD. This final price represents roughly ten times the current market value of typical 550 Maranellos, which normally trade hands between $200,000 USD and $300,000 USD. Today, a generational shift in the high-end market drives collectors to pay unprecedented premiums for memorabilia connected to iconic cultural figures. The sale demonstrates how provenance and celebrity association now rival mechanical rarity in determining the value of vintage supercars.

The basketball icon originally obtained the front-engined Ferrari new in late May of 1997. Procured through Foreign Cars Italia in North Carolina, the grand tourer arrived dripping in classic Italian aesthetic cues. This vehicle is painted in Rosso Barchetta and features a tan leather interior alongside striking chrome Speedline wheels. Bearing the specific chassis number 108712, the highly coveted vehicle stands as a rare piece of automotive history, serving as just one of the 3,083 550 Maranellos ever built by the marque.

During his storied ownership period, Jordan drove the car for around 6,400 miles, actively utilizing the machine for commutes to Chicago Bulls games and team practices. While Jordan owned the vehicle, it proudly wore an Illinois vanity plate that read “MJ 5”. His sports car was heavily tied to his legendary championship run. Mere hours after winning his fifth NBA Championship on June 13, 1997, Jordan famously left the United Center sitting behind the wheel of the Ferrari. Its physical presence left a lasting cultural mark, as sneaker designer Tinker Hatfield directly referenced the car’s shape when designing the Air Jordan XIV shoe.

Jordan eventually sold the Ferrari in late 2002 via Lake Forest Sportscars in the Chicago area. The car was subsequently purchased by a California owner and did not emerge for public sale for 24 years. It was finally unearthed by John Temerian, founder of the supercar seller Curated, who located the vehicle following an exhaustive decade-long search. Temerian managed to track it down by recreating an incomplete VIN from an internet forum using Ferrari dealer records. Bringing its rich history full circle, the car traveled back to Chicago in May for a pre-sale photoshoot on the grounds of Jordan’s mansion.
