The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights” is officially the first song in Spotify history to hit 5 billion streams.
The streamer confirmed the news themselves on August 31, making the announcement on social media. “Blinding Lights” achieved this feat about six years after its release; it dropped in November 2019 as the second single from The Weeknd’s After Hours.
“Blinding Lights” hit 4 billion Spotify streams in January 2024. During its release, it stayed at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for four weeks and went on to become the first song to stay in the top 10 for a whole year. It’s since been certified diamond by the RIAA.
