Summary

  • Takahiro Miyashita announces his return to lead Number(N)ine, following his departure in 2009
  • Announced via the brand’s new Instagram account, the founder’s return also hints at a revival of rock and grunge-inspired aesthetics

Takahiro Miyashita is officially returning to the creative helm of the label he founded, Number(N)ine. Announced through the brand’s new official Instagram, the announcement features a stark background against minimalist white text, reading “BAÇK, I MISSED YOU” followed by “NUMBER(N)INE BY TAKAHIRO MIYASHITA. This highly anticipated comeback has many speculating that he will bring back the irreverent spirit and rock-ready sensibility that defined Number(N)ine’s influential heyday in the late ’90s and early ’00s.

Miyashita’s original tenure, from the brand’s founding in 1997 to its closure in 2009, established it as a groundbreaking force in Japanese fashion with a cult-like following. Number(N)ine was celebrated for its emotionally charged, music-inspired collections that expertly blended punk, grunge and intricate tailoring. After his exit, Miyashita pursued a more singular, independent creative path, which he explored through his subsequent brand, TheSoloist. Less than two months ago, Miyashita also announced his departure from TAKAHIROMIYASHITATheSoloist.

His return to Number(N)ine, which has continued to operate under different ownership, signals a strategic new direction that reestablishes the deep connection between the designer and the iconic label he created.
