  • Tiller says he would have been happy as an OVO writer

Bryson Tiller has opened up about a defining moment in his career: his decision to sign with RCA Records instead of joining Drake’s OVO Sound label. In a recent interview on New Rory & Mal, Tiller revealed that he was all but ready to join OVO and that he had been in conversations with Drake early in his career, but a lack of communication led him to sign with another label.

“I’m being so blunt. Honest. The only reason I didn’t sign [to OVO] is just because bro didn’t hit me back one time,” Tiller said. At the time, the Louisville native had a child and people back home who were looking to him to succeed. While his team was “hounding” him and flying him to New York for a meeting with RCA, Tiller sent Drake a final text message to see if he was serious about a deal. However, when he didn’t receive a response, he chose to sign with what he considered “the most sure shot.” He also added, ” know he just busy, super busy dude. I’m not saying that he didn’t want me to sign or whatever, but at that moment, like, I had a kid.”

The 32-year-old artist shared how he thought he was a grat fit for OVO, revealing, “I was like, ‘Yo, OVO is really in my blood, for real.’ I really have studied [Drake’s] catalog. There’s a couple of people that I really consider huge strands of my musical DNA, and Drake is one of them.” Tiller admitted that he was so inspired by Drake’s music that he would have been content to be a writer for OVO, even if it meant less fame. He said, “If you could take away all my fame right now, nobody recognize me, I’ll be so OK with it.” This revelation provides a rare glimpse into a sliding-doors moment for Tiller’s career, a decision that cemented his path in the music industry.
