Summary

  • Hilary Pecis’ Wandering is now on view at Timothy Taylor London through July 19.
  • Featuring a suite of new paintings, the exhibition renders everyday snapshots through chromatic clarity, holding a light up to the surreal beauty in the overlooked moments.

There’s a kind of looking that happens when you’re not really seeing, the kind of sight that happens when you’re merely passing through. In Hilary Pecis‘ new exhibition at Timothy Taylor, the artist closes that gap between the two. Now on view at the gallery’s London outpost, Wandering captures that flicker of perception, exposing the otherwordly through the lens of the overlooked.

Known for her luminous still lifes and landscape paintings, Pecis continues her visual meditation on the everyday, rendering the ordinary through sharp chromatic clarity. Each piece of Wandering begins as a photographed on a run or her commute to the studio, later transforming prosaic scenes into layered displays visual poetry.

In works like “Bakery Display,” Pecis brings our attention to the seductive geometry of a pastry rack in Greenpoint, Brooklyn: mounds of berries, thick sponge layers and plump dollops of whipped cream neatly arranged in tight rows. Another work, “Free Box” evokes hope and grief through a lonesome cardboard box on the curb and its inbetween-ness of ownership.

Viewing Pecis’ paintings is a return to wonder — a childlike curiosity toward the world and nature’s ever-unfolding beauty. Light bends and blue hues delicately ripple in “Hotel Pool,” while the milk-white heron in “Creek Egret” reminds us of the sweet, serendipitous moments that emerge when we allow ourselves to truly see them.

Wandering is now on view through July 19.
