Ex-EMKA Racing Porsche 911 GT3 R "RSR Specification" Heads to Auction
One of only 66 examples built by Porsche Motorsport for the 2000 season.
A special vehicle with deep ties to Porsche and Pink Floyd history is heading to auction. RM Sotheby’s will soon offer a 2000 Porsche 911 GT3 R, originally delivered to EMKA Racing, the privateer team founded by Pink Floyd manager Steve O’Rourke. One of only 66 examples built by Porsche Motorsport for the 2000 season, the car made its debut at the 24 Hours of Daytona piloted by five-time Le Mans winner Derek Bell, alongside O’Rourke, Tim Sugden and Stephen Day.
The GT3 R would go on to contest major endurance events, including Le Mans, Spa and the Nürburgring 1000 Km, while also achieving FIA GT class victories at Enna-Pergusa and Anderstorp in 2003. After O’Rourke’s passing, the car changed hands several times, including a stint with Tim Sugden’s GruppeM Racing team, which upgraded the car to “RSR Specification” in 2005. This included wider bodywork and a six-speed sequential gearbox.
Following a crash at the Silverstone 1000 Km in 2005, the car was reshelled and later passed through the hands of notable hill climb drivers before receiving two major engine overhauls — most recently a €54,000 EUR ($61,582 USD) rebuild in 2015 by RS Tuning, operated by former RUF engineer Reingold Schmirler. Presented in matte black with BBS wheels, the car has not been driven since its rebuild.
Bidding for the storied GT3 R will kick off on April 23, as part of RM Sotheby’s Shift Online: Europe and Middle East auction, and is estimated to fetch as much as $550,000 USD.
