2hollis Shines On 'star'

2hollis has his sights set on far beyond the stars, taking his intoxicating Internet-nurtured offerings to galaxies far beyond the scope of space travel. After bearing his soul on boy, the esoteric enigma that is one of today’s most quickly ascending artists has lifted the veil on his fourth studio project (and first under new label Interscope), which comes aptly entitled: star.

Once an IYKYK figure who existed solely within the safe contents of the World Wide Web, 2hollis has found himself beginning the navigate the mainstream music stream. After appearing as the opening act on Ken Carson’s headlining Chaos Tour, Hollis then embarked on his own headlining tour this past year, selling out shows in North America, Australia, Asia and Europe.

However, star now cements the young talent as a household name in galaxies far away as well, as the artist addictingly combines post-rage, punk, trap and electronic influences into a cohesive yet cleanly chaotic package. Despite dropping “style” a few weeks back, the cut doesn’t appear on the 15-track star, which, instead, features a lineup of entirely new and solo tracks.

“beginning” eases listeners into the album, which arrives as a distorted and disruptive yet still vulnerable race-car ride of a listen, finding the musician now confidently in the driver’s seat and authentically musing on his rather sudden rise to fame. Loaded with hedonistic-fueled anthems, star is a raw interplay of the highs and lows of being 2hollis, pieced together by head-banging bass drops and sleek production.

High points in particular include the glitchy “flash,” which comes followed by the David Bowie-interpolating “cope.” “eldest child” is a more vulnerable point of the project with Hollis proving he can still get in his bag without being blinded by the bright, shiny things in front of him; “safe” then closes it out on a similarly introspective note, with Hollis reminding us that, at the end of the day, he’s still just a boy looking for confirmation that he’s on the right path.
