Mike Epps Confirms 'Last Friday' Is Officially in the Works
Stating that he got the go signal from Ice Cube himself.
Last Friday, the long-awaited installment in the comedy franchise, is officially in the works as per Mike Epps.
The Friday After Next actor and comedian told The Breakfast Club that he received word from franchise co-creator Ice Cube that the project is finally pushing through. “He called me the other day, said we just finished the deal. So, we doing the last Friday, man,” Epps said, going on to give praise to Cube. “And big shout-out to Cube; that’s another brother that has put so many brothers on, man, and don’t really get the props for it. Put me, Chris Tucker, Bernie Mac, I mean name ’em. This dude gave dudes opportunities.”
He added that he has confidence in the script although he hasn’t read through it yet, “I haven’t seen the script, but I’m pretty sure it’s good. And we’re gonna bring in the new comics. We’re gonna put the DC Young Flys and all of them in with the OGs. It’s going to be a good ass time.” Epps also opened up about wanting Chris Tucker, who portrayed Smokey in the original 1995 film, to come back for one last ride. “People still love Chris Tucker, he’s still Smokey,” he shared. “He laid it down, he positioned me to do it. So Chris, if you’re listening, we need you, baby boy. Come on back.”
Friday started off with first 1995 film that co-starred Tucker and Ice Cube in the lead roles. It was followed up by 2000’s Next Friday and 2002’s Friday After Next, both of which still starred Cube in the same role.
The fourth film in the franchise has been in development purgatory for years due to a battle over its rights and creative control. In June 2024, however, Cube announced that he and Warner Bros. are finally working the installment thanks to the studio’s new leadership.
