Stellantis Unveils New Hands-Free and Eyes-Off AI Driving Tech
Dubbed the STLA AutoDrive system and expected to begin roll out across Stellantis brands soon.
Stellantis has introduced STLA AutoDrive, an advanced autonomous driving technology offering hands-free, eyes-off driving up to 37 mph. The new SAE Level 3 system is designed for ease in dense urban traffic, enabling drivers to engage safely in activities like watching a movie, reading, or catching up on emails.
The technology seamlessly handles routine driving tasks, including maintaining safe distances, adjusting speed, steering and braking based on real-time traffic conditions. Ned Curic, Stellantis Chief Engineering and Technology Officer, emphasized the technology’s purpose, stating, “Helping drivers make the best use of their time is a priority.”
STLA AutoDrive is engineered for dependable performance even under challenging weather conditions, including nighttime and road spray scenarios. An automated sensor-cleaning system further ensures consistent, optimal operation.
Beyond Level 3 functionality, STLA AutoDrive also supports Level 2 (hands-on) and Level 2+ (hands-off, eyes-on) driving at higher speeds, featuring Adaptive Cruise Control and lane-centering capabilities. Additionally, future updates could enable hands-free driving at speeds up to 59 mph and off-road automation.
Built upon a scalable, cloud-connected architecture, the system will be deployed globally across Stellantis brands, adaptable to specific market regulations. Regular over-the-air updates will continuously enhance performance.
