MDS (MIYAKE DESIGN STUDIO) and ASICS have announced a significant joint venture, the “ISSEY MIYAKE FOOT” footwear development project, dedicated to creating unexplored footwear concepts by fundamentally reexamining the human foot. Built on years of mutual trust and shared commitment to technology and design, this collaboration seeks to integrate the core philosophies of both Japanese powerhouses.
The inaugural product, the “HYPER TAPING,” which initially debuted during the IM MEN Spring/Summer 2026 show during Paris Fashion Week. The shoe is a radical reconstruction inspired by the functional design of the ASICS Stripes—originally meant to enhance structural strength—translated into the concept of “taping.”
The HYPER TAPING model incorporates thick, elastic bands that wrap around the foot, stabilizing movement and creating a striking visual line. It features a unique sneaker structure built upon a wrestling outsole for secure hold and stability, alongside a newly developed last and responsive SPEVA midsole for everyday comfort. The shoe will be available in fluorescent GREEN, all-BLACK, and all-GREY, representing a fusion of ASICS’ sports science and MDS’s foundational exploration of the body and clothing. The shoe is scheduled for release on January 5, 2026 at select retailers at Issey Miyake and at ASICS.
