Celebrating skate culture, Vans’ tribute to Max Fish, designed by OTW by Vans in partnership with PLAYLAB, INC., invokes the legacy of the downtown institution with a faithful reproduction of “the Fish” in SoHo. The tribute’s opening night hosted the skateboarding, fashion, art, and music communities of New York for a first look at the recreation of the original Max Fish, first opened 35 years ago on Manhattan’s Lower East Side.

Reflecting on the brand’s “Checkered Past,” OTW by Vans organized 3 days of programming in downtown NYC, including a live musical performance and exclusive product seeding. To kick off NYFW in high spirits, the footwear company revived the skate staple, Max Fish with preserved decor features from the original bar, including the pool table, Pegasus statue, and Julio Iglesias lightbox. A refurbished jukebox has been outfitted with the same CD assortment that soundtracked the original Max Fish.

Walking into the space, guests were met with the facade of the legendary bar. A graffiti wall spanned across the room, bringing a gritty feel to the room that was characteristic of the original Max Fish. The evening kicked off with a DJ set by New York trio Las Flaquitas before a surprise live performance by TV on the Radio closed out the night. Classic late-night bites were passed around — burgers, popcorn and more — while the second floor hosted a DJ booth and pool table.

During the tribute party, guests also had a chance to check out OTW by Vans’ exclusive Old Skool colorway release with Satoshi Nakamoto — a partnership that displays the brand’s affinity for challenging conventions and highlighting impactful collaborators.

Throughout its 30 years in action, the space attracted artists, musicians and skaters alike — acting as a downtown meeting place and community hub for those on the scene. The spot hosted monthly art shows, featuring the works of Tom Otterness, Mark Flood, Mark Gonzales, Neckface, Revolt and more. Max Fish regularly put on live shows, hosting Quicksand, The Beatnuts, Elliot Smith, Matt Sweeney, Mya and many more.

On Saturday, September 7, Vans will bring the party to Brooklyn with a Block Party to celebrate the best of NY Skateboarding at Skate Space 198, including skate jams and lessons, an “Off the Wall” community market, and even a “skate rave.” Register to attend here.

Vans’ New York moments continue to signify the brand’s commitment to promoting skateboarding as a leading force in culture through distinctive storytelling and experiences. Throughout the week’s activities, the Vans Old Skool will symbolize skateboarding and be embraced by the fashion and music communities.
