Champion shares more on “embracing the unknown” for his debut solo project: a day-in-the-life of “a vast, always moving world.”
Matt Champion‘s debut solo album, Mika’s Laundry, is an esoteric escape: an immersive sonic “vast, always moving world” where exploration is encouraged and self-discovery is stimulated. Champion has continued to expand the album’s captivating dreamscape to the visual realm, through a few recent intimate, live shows and now, a vinyl release.
“We just wanted to bring out the details of a vast, always moving world, and get a look at what a day being there could be like,” explains Champion of his approach to the 13-track Mika’s Laundry.
“A lot of the writing and melodies on Mika’s Laundry came from a place of chance & exploration in the beginning. If you start refining too early, you might move on a route that is too structured, and then too many walls start forming around you. There is room for refinement but I like when there’s an unknown journey to get there.”
The on-wax release comes on the heels of the former BROCKHAMPTON musician’s pair of live performances in Los Angeles and New York City – the only two he did in support of the project. Champion worked closely with Anna Pollack to bring the green-hued world to life, adding that the duo carefully “spent a lot of time going through [the world] to determine what exactly we wanted to highlight from it” in the visual realm.
“Green is natural. I’m always drawn to green,” he says of the album’s green-hued colorway. “I don’t think it was a solid point in the beginning to have green as a theme but with each addition – the color, the word – it kept appearing and sticking. It’s a very calming and inviting color.”
Champion, who prefers to “fully engulf himself” in the creative process, also worked alongside Henry Kwapis as well, noting that they “did lots of meandering to find spaces that we might overlook,” to then implement into Mika’s Laundry.
