5000 Did It for The Bay in SS25
The CFDA finalist reawakened “the rebellious spirit and raw energy” of the Mabuhay Gardens in a captivating collection named after the pivotal punk club.
5000 brought The Bay to New York City for its Spring/Summer 2025 “Mabuhay Gardens” showcase. Set in Lower Manhattan’s Marble Cemetery, Oakland-based CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund-nominated designer Taylor Thompson paid homage to the iconic San Francisco punk venue in a collection of the same name. Often shortened to “The Mab,” the club was key in fostering community among the Punk and New Wave spaces and connecting chaos with creativity — the exact combination Thompson taps into for his new collection.
With white umbrellas in hand, models flexed the collection’s looks not in a typical runway show but by strolling casually around the garden. Maintaining intense eye contact — made even more intense by striking eye makeup on most— the models interacted with one another and even the audience, one model stopping a guest in her tracks to ask where her head wrap was from.
Particularly inspired by The Mab’s “rebellious spirit and raw energy,” Thompson presented pieces that members of The Dead Kennedys and Black Flag would proudly put on in 2024, spanning tinny silver skirts, printed tailored suiting, and fluorescent pants.
While 5000 is, on paper, a menswear brand, Thompson continually emphasizes the fact that the label’s garments are for everyone, donned by all genders in the sunny showcase.
