Fabien Cappello Crafts a "Cartoonish" Silhouette for new Toto Lamp
Created in collaboration with Swedish brand Hem.

If you were asked to draw a lamp, chances are you’d depict something with a triangular shade and a rectangular bottom – an archetypal version. But when you transform those simple proportions into a three-dimensional object, it would form something similar to what Fabien Cappello has created with “Toto”.
Designed in collaboration with Swedish brand Hem, Cappello’s Toto lamp takes its inspiration from the most simple of lighting designs, but subverts them through the use of scale and colour.
“The project came out of an intuition I had, that an entire lamp could be made of a standard lampshade construction,” Cappello tells Hypebeast. “One cylinder lamp shade would be produced to make the base and one conical would serve as lampshade, but really the entire body of the lamp lit up and became the actual shade.”
Because the entire lamp ends up illuminated, the colours and patterns on the textiles – which the brand describes as “cartoonish” – are visible across its entire surface. “This allows us to use a variety of textiles to create colorful compositions,” adds the designer, whose relationship with Hem began back in 2021 with a limited-edition glass piece.
Then, Cappello decided to play with scale, and created different sizes to suit different uses and environments. The largest lamp measures 64cm tall, the medium is 47cm, and the small is 28cm. Both the large and medium lamps are avaialbe in differrnt colour combinations across the shade and base, whereas the small comes in block colors only.
Toto is available to purchase now on Hem’s website, with prices beginning at £199 GBP (approximately $261 USD).
