The Malin has opened the doors to its second location in Nashville, enlisting the help of Dublin-based designer Róisín Lafferty to create the interiors.

Describing itself as a “work-focused members club”, The Malin aims to create a space for local professionals that feels high-end. Inside the South Gulch-located outpost are 58 dedicated desks, seven private offices, five meeting rooms, 10 phone booths, a library, and a kitchen.

For Lafferty, the project marks her first in the US, and for it, she worked with the features of the original building, which was constructed in 1945 – but fusing it with the energy of the surrounding, young neighbourhood.

Throughout the space, oversized forms and objects blur the lines between art and furniture. The design features a pattern inspired by local architecture, refined into a graphic stripe, layered with high gloss lacquer, burl wood, and graphic carpet.

Natural lighting is abundant, with panoramic grid windows ensuring sunlight floods the space. For when a bit more illumination is needed, pendants, table and ceiling lamps have been sourced from the likes of Bover and Santa & Cole.

Cement flooring is warmed with accent rugs, and in conjunction with the exposed ductwork, contributes to a post-industrial aesthetic. Communal spaces feature solid oak, marble, and limestone surfaces, with furniture upholstered in Yarwood leather and Pierre Frey textiles. Elsewhere, high gloss lacquer, burl wood, rippled glass, steel, bronze, and marble finishes are applied.

“I wanted to ensure the vibrancy and energy of The Malin shone through, combined with a punchiness and boldness we are known for,” Lafferty said. “There is a deliberate sense of theater and showmanship in the design, reflecting the location of the building.”

Founder and CEO Ciarán McGuigan added: It was a joy to work with Róisín Lafferty and her team to bring celebrated Irish design stateside and to envision a second Nashville location that reflects its surrounding community.”
