The Hole’s summer show, ‘Tone Poem,’ in Los Angeles, features works within a tight tonal range. This exhibition explores the evocative potential of limited palettes, showcasing monochromes and reduced palette paintings across a greyscale gallery.

‘Tone Poem’ serves as a crash course in color theory. Aiste Stancikaite’s pieces glow with added white tints, Paul Riedmüeller’s works mix hues with pure gray, and Charline Tyberghein’s paintings darken hues with black shades. For many artists, tone, tint, and shade are second nature, shaping their expressive, minimalist styles.

Abstract artists like Daniel Byrd weave three colors together, while Matt Phillips and Russell Tyler make bold statements with restrained palettes. Playful tones emerge in Peter Mohall’s color theory mockery and Felipe Pantone’s interactive kinetic pieces. Jackie Head’s ‘Mango Violet Blend’ highlights scientific precision in slip-cast porcelain.

Figurative works include Alison Blickle’s ‘Eclipsed,’ Nathan Ritterpusch’s greyscale Westerns, and Tim Brawner’s purple sci-fi vibes in ‘Character Head 1.’ Sally Kindberg, Gavin Lynch, and Richard Burton contribute tight palettes evoking rich emotions and scenes.

‘Tone Poem’ sharpens focus on form and composition, inviting viewers to appreciate the subtleties of reduced color. Visit the gallery this weekend to see if this experiment in limited palettes plays in the same key. The show in on view through August 17.
