Making good design accessible to all has been at the heart of Habitat for 60 years. Established in the early ‘60s, the British homeware retailer built its foundations on the “European way” of shopping home goods, delivering unique objects that turned ordinary living spaces into exciting settings.

Now, as it celebrates its milestone anniversary, Habitat looks back at its storied legacy through a new installation series at London’s Design Museum. Tracing decades of different design movements and game-changing innovations, “Changing Spaces: 60 Years of Design with Habitat” will utilize immersive displays alongside some of its most iconic homeware products to illuminate its past.

Split into five parts, visitors will be able to explore the installation series dispersed across the museum space from its main atrium to the outside plaza. An artistic-led display, under the theme of “Create,” is set to open the showcase with an interactive activity inspired by the hand-crafted Radica ceramic plates designed by Sivia Kamodyová. Visitors can also find an insightful walkthrough of Habitat’s last 60 years in the “Connect” section which leads into “Transform,” a display dedicated to the power of lighting.

In a look to the future, the final displays – named “Rest” and “Play” – discover how Habitat’s design objects continue to serve a purpose in the contemporary landscape by helping users adopt a better quality of life in the digital age. You’ll experience its soft furnishings and textiles in the “Rest” zone while “Play” invites interactivity through experimental design with its new 60 Years of Design Collection.

For the homeware obsessives wanting to delve further into the retailer’s ethos, the Design Museum joins forces with Habitat to host a special evening event as part of its Lates program. Taking place later this month, it combines a private viewing of the exhibition as well as a panel talk featuring Habitat’s in-house designers, recent collaborator Simone Brewster, and Hypebeast’s design editor.
