Xbox rolled out its Adaptive Controller in 2018 for gamers who have limited mobility. The device can sit flat on a table, rather than needing to be held. When it comes to users’ disabilities and developing new technology to accommodate them, however, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution.

ByoWave has now partnered with the “Designed for Xbox” team to create a new controller that can be configured to a variety of builds depending on its user’s needs. The Proteus Controller comes as a kit of “snap and play” parts, from which users can build the best way for them to play.

Offering over 100 different variations, the controller can sit on a table or be made into a handheld. It can also be split into two different controllers entirely, rather than one single device. The kit comes with two Power Cubes – each containing a battery – along with Analog Cubes that contain the left and right analog sticks, D-pads and all the buttons necessary.

The Proteus Controller is compatible with the Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Windows 10 and 11. Priced at a discounted $255 USD during a limited window, ByoWave is taking pre-orders for the controller with units expected to ship this fall.
