Nintendo CEO Says Switch Successor Will Be Announced Within Next Year
Don’t expect to hear anything console-related at the upcoming Nintendo Direct.
The gaming industry has been rumoring what will follow the Nintendo Switch for years now. As more time has passed, some have even gotten frustrated with the absence of any news regarding a new console, going on seven years since the Switch made its debut.
Nintendo CEO Shuntaro Furukawa has now taken to X with a long-awaited update on the Switch successor.
Furukawa wrote that Nintendo is planning to make an announcement about the successor console “within this fiscal year,” meaning by June 30, 2024. He also noted the lengthy timeline, saying that it’s been over nine years since Nintendo announced the Switch in March 2015.

The CEO also squashed any fans’ expectation that they’d hear more about Switch successor at the upcoming Nintendo Direct, writing that the event will focus strictly on its “software lineup” debuting during the second half of the year.
“Please be aware that there will be no mention of the Nintendo Switch successor during that presentation,” Furukawa wrote.
Commenters pointed out that the post highly suggests a Nintendo Switch 2 is on the way, even if Furukawa didn’t say so outright.
