Threads Ramps Up Safety Measures With ‘Hidden Words’ Feature
CEO Adam Mosseri detailed the handy new tool.
As Threads continues to grow, the platform is cracking down on posts containing hateful or offensive content. Similar to Instagram, the app now has a “hidden words” feature, where it automatically filters out certain words, phrases and even emojis.
CEO Adam Mosseri announced the feature, fittingly, on his own Threads account.
“Today on Threads, we’re expanding Hidden Words, which until now only were applied to replies, so you can filter out unwanted content from feeds, search, profiles, and post replies on Threads,” Mosseri wrote.

The filter will automatically be applied to both one’s “Following” and their “For You” tabs. Although the app’s moderators determine what’s considered to be an offensive word or piece of content, users will also be able to input words, phrases and emojis that they want to hide from their own feed under the section reading, “manage custom words and phrases.”
Along with the hidden words, Threads is currently testing out the ability for a user to mute the notifications on a piece of content that they post, ideal for those get a lot of engagement but don’t want to be distracted.
